A special way to start the last day of the year.

Just over a month ago I was sitting with a group of about 10 people in a thatched hut, at the edge of a village, in Northeast Laos. The most heavily bombed part of the most heavily bombed country in the world. Eating noodle soup and chatting, the conversation soon turned to the drink in our glasses, Beer Lao.

"It's good," I said. "But it's not Augustiner Helles."

"Ja-- that's right!" said a mustached man in his sixties, sitting across the table with his wife. "But you know Augustiner?"

That's how I met Wolfgang and Renate, and found out that they lived in Munich, Germany, a place I tend to visit with some kind of regularity. And that's when we promised to have a beer together the next time our paths crossed.

Our paths next crossed on the last day of 2009. Wolfgang said he knew of a great place to grab breakfast. It was halfway through 8 nurnberger brats, a half-liter of beer, and a pile of saurkraut, that we started to talk about travel. Turns out Wolfgang is a bit famous in his home country-- he's officially the most widely traveled German of all time. And, he is in the top ten list worldwide.

Onward! I thought to myself (and wrote on Facebook later that day), a great thought for the coming year.
