On my first full day in Hanoi, I had a mission: go to the Temple of Literature, find the musicians near the back, and track down Hoa Dang, a T'rung player. A year before, my close friend, Mr. Kurtz, found Hoa playing her music in the same spot, and bought one of her CDs; today her music is going to be used in the soundtrack of an upcoming documentary-- but in order to pay her for its use, I had to find her.
While I did find the musicians, and they were VERY confused about why I wanted to talk to Hoa, my mission was only partially successful. Hoa had moved to China for two years, in order to study her craft at a university. After half and hour, I finally convinced another one of the musicians to give me Hoa's family's phone number; it was either her husband's or her mother's number. And I forwarded the number to Mr. Kurtz. Repeated attempts to call the number failed over the next few weeks.
